Objective: To design and install an automated roof-mounted bushfire sprinkler system that would help protect the home from ember attack while allowing remote activation during an emergency.
Project Summary: A customised roof sprinkler system featuring butterfly and impact sprinklers was installed on a large weatherboard home in Macedon. The system utilises the property’s existing water tank and is powered by a Davey remote-start fire pump with integrated heat sensor technology, providing reliable automated bushfire protection for the home.

Protecting a Weatherboard Home in a Bushfire-Prone Area
Victoria Bushfire Protection Services was engaged by the owners of a beautiful weatherboard home in Macedon to design and install a reliable roof sprinkler system that would help safeguard their property during the bushfire season.
Surrounded by established gardens, mature trees and dense vegetation, the property enjoys the peaceful natural environment that makes Macedon such a desirable place to live. However, these same surroundings also place the home within a high bushfire risk area where ember attack can threaten properties long before a fire front arrives.
The clients wanted a dependable bushfire protection solution that could be activated remotely if they were away from home, while also making use of the existing water infrastructure already available on the property.
Planning and Designing the Roof Sprinkler System
Following a detailed site inspection, our team assessed the home’s roof design, surrounding vegetation and existing water supply before preparing a customised roof sprinkler layout for the clients to review.
The property already featured an on-site water tank with sufficient storage capacity to support an effective bushfire sprinkler system, allowing us to utilise the existing water source without the need for additional tanks.
To provide comprehensive roof coverage, we designed a system combining both butterfly sprinklers and high-performance impact sprinklers. Each sprinkler type was carefully positioned to maximise water distribution across the home’s pitched rooflines while maintaining the flow rates required for reliable operation.
A Davey remote-start fire pump was selected to suit the available water supply and was carefully matched to the system’s operating requirements. The pump was sized to provide more than two hours of continuous operation, with both the sprinkler layout and pump performance calculated to ensure the available water supply could support the complete operating cycle during a bushfire emergency.
Once the proposed design had been presented, the clients approved the system and installation commenced.
Automated Roof Sprinkler System Installation
Our experienced installation team completed the full supply and installation over three days, ensuring every component of the bushfire protection system was professionally installed and thoroughly tested.
The Davey remote-start pump was connected to the existing water tank before pipework was installed throughout the property to supply the rooftop sprinkler network. Butterfly and impact sprinklers were then strategically mounted around the roof to achieve the coverage specified in the approved design.
To further improve the system’s reliability during an emergency, a heat sensor was installed alongside the fire pump. Should Wi-Fi or smart-device communication become unavailable during a bushfire event, the heat sensor is designed to automatically activate the pump once predetermined temperatures are detected, providing an additional layer of protection for the property.
The completed system also allows the homeowners to remotely start or stop the pump from their mobile phones anywhere within Victoria, giving them confidence that the system can be activated even when they are away from home.
Testing, Automation and Project Completion
Following installation, our team carried out comprehensive commissioning and testing to ensure every component of the roof sprinkler system operated exactly as intended.
The sprinkler layout was tested to confirm consistent water coverage across the roof, while operating pressures, pump performance and pipework were inspected to verify reliable system operation. The remote-start functionality was also tested to ensure the clients could confidently control the system from their mobile devices.
The integrated heat sensor was inspected and verified to provide automatic backup activation should communication with the remote control system be interrupted during a bushfire emergency.
