Objective: To design and install a roof-mounted bushfire sprinkler system capable of providing complete roof coverage using the property’s existing water supply.
Project Summary: A professionally designed roof sprinkler system featuring eight high-performance impact sprinklers was installed on a newly constructed acreage home. The system draws water from an existing underground concrete tank and is powered by a Davey electric fire pump, providing reliable bushfire protection with future expansion capability.

Designing Bushfire Protection for a New Acreage Home
Victoria Bushfire Protection Services was engaged by the owners of a newly built home in Gisborne South to design and install a reliable bushfire protection system before they moved into the property.
Situated on picturesque acreage surrounded by mountain views, established bushland and open lawns, the property enjoys a peaceful rural setting. However, like many homes in the Macedon Ranges region, it is also exposed to an elevated bushfire risk during Victoria’s fire season.
The clients wanted a professionally designed roof sprinkler system that would provide dependable protection for their home while making use of the property’s existing underground concrete water tank. They also requested an electric pump solution that would provide reliable operation during an emergency.
Planning and Designing the Roof Sprinkler System
Following a detailed site inspection, our team developed a customised rooftop sprinkler layout to provide complete coverage across the home’s pitched rooflines while also delivering additional water coverage to sections of the rear lawn.
Eight high-performance impact sprinklers were strategically positioned across the roof to maximise water distribution. Each sprinkler delivers an approximately 18-metre diameter spray pattern with full-circle rotation, ensuring consistent coverage across the roof surface.
The property already featured a below-ground concrete water tank located approximately 12 metres from the home, making it an ideal water source for the bushfire sprinkler system. After assessing the available electrical supply near the tank, our team recommended installing a Davey electric fire pump capable of supplying all eight sprinklers at the required operating pressure.
The clients appreciated that an electric pump could continue operating until the water supply was exhausted, while also allowing the flexibility to expand the system in the future by connecting additional water tanks or even the property’s nearby dam if greater water capacity was ever required.
After reviewing the proposed design, the clients approved the installation and work was scheduled.
Roof Sprinkler System Installation
Our experienced installation team completed the entire bushfire protection system within a single business day, minimising disruption for the homeowners and eliminating the need for multiple trades returning over several days.
The Davey electric pump was installed adjacent to the existing concrete water tank before being connected to the rooftop sprinkler network. Pipework was carefully installed to ensure reliable water delivery to each sprinkler location while maintaining a neat and professional finish.
Once the system infrastructure was complete, all eight impact sprinklers were securely mounted across the roof in accordance with the approved design, providing comprehensive coverage across the home’s roof area and sections of the surrounding landscape.
Testing, Future Expansion and Project Completion
Once installation was complete, our team carried out comprehensive testing of the entire bushfire protection system.
Each sprinkler was inspected to confirm correct operation, water pressure and spray performance, while all pipework and fittings were checked to ensure there were no leaks or blockages. The system performed exactly as designed, delivering reliable coverage across the roof.
Testing also confirmed there was sufficient capacity within the current system to accommodate approximately three to four additional impact sprinklers should the clients wish to expand the protected area in the future.
The homeowners were extremely pleased with the finished installation and are already planning to add a WiFi control device to the electric pump. This upgrade will allow the sprinkler system to be activated remotely from their smartphone, providing additional peace of mind if the property is unattended during a bushfire emergency.
